I think the progress that you and your volunteers have made is amazing. So many stones have been cleaned and up-righted, it is truly a labor of love and it shows.

Who bought the church? For what use? Supposedly plots are owned by individuals and families...I own 4, so how does a sale happen without notification? Surprised that they didn't make some kind of offer to allow continued maintenance. I would love to volunteer at some point as my father is buried there and again, I theoretically own 3 additional sites. Unfortunately I currently work a 6 day schedule with Mondays off and reside in Lake George so I'm not "just around the corner". Are there planned work days? Thanks for all you are doing!
ReplyDeleteRon, much has happened since your June post. A concerned citizen contacted Ch 13 and Ch 10 and both stations have done a number of new-spots and interviews with Chris White and several volunteers. In a nutshell...the church building in downtown Albany sold and the cemetery sold along with it.
ReplyDeleteThe new owners skipped town and the grass has grown to over 3ft tall. Pleas to the city have gone un-answered and several volunteers (including myself) have been mowing and raking and bringing the cemetery to some sort of normalcy, however, the grass continues to grow. Its overwhelming without commercial equipment non-the-less, a small dedicated group continue to persevere.
I would like to see the attorney general get involved to see if the sale was legal to begin with and find out who should be held accountable.
In answer to your question..there are no specific work days scheduled (that I'm aware of), so good people just show up and do anything they can to mow, wack, rake or haul whenever they can. Even if you come down and take care of your family's plot and maybe a neighboring grave plot...it's a help.
This has been an ongoing dilemma and fortunately Dan Levy (Ch 13) has been covering it relentlessly. Hopefully the news coverage will spur city officials and their legal team to do the right thing and rectify this disgraceful situation.
